Learn PORTUGUESE with strange news (OPÇÃO 1)

FINALMENTE ⏳ FINALLY

Faz um TEMPO que eu não apareço aqui para escrever um texto para o blog, e isso se deve a dois motivos:

Eu normalmente faço isso quando tenho um vídeo novo para falar sobre como foi o processo de produção. Como vocês já perceberam, faz tempo que não publico nada novo.
Gosto de compartilhar mais sobre o processo criativo dos vídeos e como eu estava me sentindo ao planejar e fazer o material. Sinceramente, nos últimos meses, eu estava passando por muitas coisas na minha vida pessoal. Além de não estar me sentindo bem, achei que não seria relevante (e muito menos divertido) compartilhar isso com vocês.

Afinal de contas, como vocês já sabem, meu objetivo é criar O MELHOR CONTEÚDO EM PORTUGUÊS para quem está aprendendo, de forma DIVERTIDA e EFICIENTE. Então, preferi esperar um pouco até que as coisas melhorassem por aqui para poder voltar a me dedicar ao YouTube. Isso significa que, se você está lendo isso: Luan voltou!

It's been A WHILE since I've shown up here to write a blog post, and there are two main reasons for that:

I usually do this when I have a new video to talk about the production process. As you've already noticed, it's been a while since I've published anything new.
I like to share more about the creative process of the videos and how I felt when planning and making the material. Honestly, over the last few months, I have been going through a lot in my personal life. So, besides not feeling well, I thought it wouldn't be relevant (and much less fun) to share that kind of update with you.

Because, after all, as you already know, my goal is to create THE BEST CONTENT IN PORTUGUESE for those who are learning in a FUN and EFFICIENT way. So, I preferred to wait a little while until things got better on my end so I could go back to fully dedicating myself to YouTube. That means if you're reading this: Luan is back!

And that brings us to the NEW VIDEO you can watch right now: "SÉRIO ISSO?

EXPERIMENTOS 🎨 EXPERIMENTS

Esse vídeo foi mais um experimento dentre muitas coisas que tenho feito para o canal.

Às vezes, sinto que estou eternamente experimentando formatos novos e coisas diferentes, sempre aguardando a reação de vocês para decidir onde focar e dedicar mais energia e tempo. MAS, com alguns formatos, já se tornou óbvio que são úteis e que vocês gostam (tipo o podcast), então não vejo problema em continuar experimentando.

Claro que preciso dar continuidade aos que já foram aprovados e que vocês já gostaram (e vou fazer isso!), mas não quero deixar de testar ideias novas. Acho que essa é a grande vantagem da produção de conteúdo educacional independente na internet: não há regras!

Não seguir regras é sempre um desafio porque significa que posso fazer QUALQUER COISA. Para quem já fez algum tipo de trabalho criativo, liberdade demais acaba sendo mais paralisante do que ter alguns fatores delimitadores para criar uma estrutura e um formato.

This video was another experiment among many things I've been trying out for the channel.

Sometimes I feel like I'm eternally experimenting with new formats and different ideas, just waiting for your reaction so I can decide where to focus and dedicate more energy and time. BUT, with some formats, it has already become obvious that they are useful and that you like them (like the podcast). So, I see no problem in continuing to experiment.

Of course, I need to continue with the formats that have already been approved and that you already enjoy (and I will do that!), but I don't want to stop experimenting. I think that's the great advantage of independent educational content production on the internet: there are no rules!

Not following rules is always a challenge because it means I can do ANYTHING. For anyone who has ever done any kind of creative work, you know that having too much freedom is often more paralyzing than having a few limiting factors to help build a structure and a format.

SÉRIO ISSO? 👀

Então, vamos ao que interessa: o que é o "SÉRIO ISSO?"

Em primeiro lugar, eu gostaria de chamar esse formato de série e ter uma playlist dedicada a ele, mas isso depende, obviamente, da recepção de vocês.

Acho que a coisa mais legal de aprender um idioma pela internet é poder usar materiais autênticos (notícias, artigos, vídeos, músicas, etc.), e eu nunca tinha conseguido encaixar o gênero NOTÍCIA especificamente em nenhum dos meus vídeos. Já faço isso com uma certa frequência nas minhas aulas particulares, porém, sempre tento selecionar notícias que sejam relevantes para o aluno, adequadas ao seu nível e ligadas ao tópico gramatical ou tema com o qual estamos trabalhando.

Para fazer isso no formato de vídeo para o YouTube, preciso criar um "aluno imaginário" com um nível específico em mente para conseguir planejar a aula de acordo.

Para evitar que o tema fosse um fator limitante e acabasse afastando o público, resolvi apostar no gênero de "notícias estranhas" (bizarras ou engraçadas). Assim, a notícia em si — ou o quão absurda ela é — se torna o fator que gera interesse, e não necessariamente o tópico.

Ou seja, para assistir ao vídeo, você não precisa ser um amante de gansos, nem de prisões, nem de Santa Catarina. Maaaaas somente a junção desses três temas em uma única manchete já desperta curiosidade suficiente para fazer alguém clicar na miniatura ou assistir ao vídeo, só para ver sobre o que diabos o professor Luan está falando haha!

E aí sim, após a sua atenção (o bem mais valioso na internet) já ter sido capturada, eu transformo a experiência de descobrir mais sobre essa notícia em uma sessão de exposição ao Português de forma guiada e contextualizada. Utilizo a abordagem de Comprehensible Input para introduzir vocabulário, perguntas de compreensão baseadas em TPRS e MUITAS referências visuais para que, mesmo sendo um iniciante, você consiga entender o que está acontecendo.

So, let's get down to business: what is "SÉRIO ISSO?"

First of all, I would like to call this format a series and have a playlist dedicated to it, but that obviously depends on how you all receive it.

I think the coolest thing about learning a language on the internet is being able to use authentic materials (news, articles, videos, music, etc.), and I had never been able to fit the NEWS genre specifically into any of my videos. I already do this quite frequently in my 1-on-1 classes; however, I always try to select news that is relevant to the student, their level, and the grammatical topic or theme we are working on.

To do this in a video format for YouTube, I need to create an "imaginary student" with a specific level in mind so I can plan the lesson accordingly.

To ensure the theme wouldn't be a limiting factor and push viewers away, I decided to bet on the "weird news" genre (bizarre or funny stories). This way, the news itself — and how absurd it is — becomes the factor that grabs your interest, rather than the specific topic.

In other words, to watch the video, you don't need to be an enthusiast of geese, prisons, or the state of Santa Catarina. Buuuut, just the combination of these three themes in a single headline is enough to arouse curiosity and encourage someone to click on the thumbnail, just to see what the hell teacher Luan is talking about haha!

And then, once your attention (the most valuable asset on the internet) has been captured, I transform the experience of discovering more about this news story into a guided and contextualized Portuguese exposure session. I use the Comprehensible Input approach to introduce vocabulary, TPRS comprehension questions, and MANY visual references so that even a beginner can understand what is going on.

LUANILDO?🥸

Outro fator experimental desse vídeo — que vai ficar muito evidente logo de cara ao olhar para a miniatura — é que resolvi brincar com diferentes personagens (Luanvaldo, Luanildo e Luanelson). Queria que houvesse interação e que o formato de "notícia" se assemelhasse mais a um programa de televisão, e não apenas a um professor lendo um texto.

Cada um deles tem uma personalidade e um cabelo diferente (me esforcei para criar variações hahaha) e cumpre um papel no programa "Sério Isso?".

Isso exigiu, obviamente, muito mais tempo de planejamento e produção: trocar de roupas, arrumar o cabelo, gravar todas as cenas com as falas de um, repetir o processo para o outro, e assim por diante.

Another experimental factor in this video — one that will be very evident right away when you look at the thumbnail — is that I decided to play around with different characters (Luanvaldo, Luanildo, and Luanelson). I wanted there to be interaction in the video so that the "news" format would feel more like a television program and not just a teacher reading a text.

Each of them has a distinct personality and hairstyle (I really struggled to create variations hahaha) and plays a specific role in the "Seriously?" program.

This obviously required much more planning and production time: changing clothes, fixing my hair, recording all the scenes with the lines for one character, repeating the process for the next, and so on.

EDIÇÃO ✂️ EDITING

Para que tudo fosse editado da maneira mais autêntica possível (com o fundo de um programa de noticiário e o mapa do tempo) pelo nosso super-herói da edição, o Bruno <3, eu também tive que usar um fundo verde para o efeito chroma key.

Apesar da minha falta de prática e experiência — e de alguns errinhos aparentes no vídeo —, acho que o resultado final ficou bem convincente. No fim do vídeo, o Bruno sugeriu deixar o fundo verdadeiro aparecer justamente para dar a perspectiva de que sou apenas um professor usando todas essas técnicas e artifícios para criar um vídeo de português hahah!

So that this could be edited in the most authentic way possible (with the background of a news program and a weather map) by our editing superhero, Bruno <3, I also had to use a green screen for a chroma key effect.

Despite my lack of practice and experience — and some apparent errors in the video —, I think the final result was pretty convincing. At the end of the video, Bruno suggested letting the real background appear precisely to give the perspective that I'm just a teacher using all these techniques and tricks to create a Portuguese video hahah!

PORTUGUÊS 🗣️ PORTUGUESE

No fim das contas, o ponto principal é justamente oportunizar a exposição ao idioma de forma contextualizada. O objetivo é evocar, de forma genuína, uma reação de "SÉRIO ISSO?!" ao assistir a essa notícia absurda. Dessa forma, o aprendizado — tanto do idioma de forma geral, quanto do vocabulário e das estruturas específicas deste vídeo — é retido e armazenado de maneira muito mais eficiente.

Enfim, espero que gostem do vídeo, mas principalmente que aprendam novas palavras, expressões e estruturas através dele.

At the end of the day, the main point is to provide exposure to the language in a contextualized way and to genuinely evoke a reaction of "SÉRIO ISSO?!" when you watch this absurd news. This ensures that the learning process — both of the language in general and of the specific vocabulary and structures in this video — is retained and stored much more efficiently.

Anyway, I hope you like the video, but mainly that you learn new words, expressions, and structures through it.
